Employers for Carers is delighted to welcome Lucy McLynn, Partner at Bates Wells Braithwaite, who has kindly agreed to act as Honorary Legal Advisor.

McLynn is ranked by Chambers UK Legal Directory as a Leader in the field of Employment, and recommended by the Legal 500 Directory and Chambers. She is a panellist on Radio 4's Money Box Live on topics including carers' rights and has also recently undertaken advisory work on the implications of the Equality Act, both for employers and service-providers.

Most significantly for us Lucy represented Sharon Coleman in the groundbreaking case on her fight against discrimination by association with a disabled person and in doing so won new rights for carers.

As a result of the ruling, an estimated 3 million people who juggle paid work as well as caring for sick or disabled family members will be entitled to the same treatment as other staff. The case established that people associated with disabled people (such as carers) have protection from direct discrimination and harassment under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
