Members' Networking Event | March 2014

Our first event of 2014 was hosted by the Financial Ombudsman Service in their wonderful “rooms with a view” in Exchange Tower in the Docklands.

At the event, which was chaired by Arthur Allen, founder of Listawood, Helena Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK launched the Employers for Carers and Carers UK research report ‘Supporting employees who are caring for someone with dementia’.  This report follows on from the workplace survey on caring for a loved one with dementia which was introduced at the last EfC event.  A copy of the report can be downloaded here.

Keith Edwards, Chair of Carers Network, BT, spoke briefly about BT’s work to support carers in the workplace focussing specifically on those who are caring for someone with dementia and why this is such an important issue.  There were interesting comments from the floor; George McNamara, Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Alzheimer’s Society spoke about how this work is an important contribution to the ambition set out in the PM’s Dementia Challenge to make businesses more dementia friendly and EfC member Miranda Johnson, Head of Corporate and Community Partnerships, Alzheimer’s Research UK, spoke about why their organisation, which works in the area of dementia, also recognises the importance of supporting carers within its own workplace, and why this prompted them to join EfC.

There was a further opportunity for networking following the speeches and there were lively discussions around the room covering workplace caring issues as well as wider equality and diversity issues.
