Our annual business breakfast for our Oxfordshire scheme members was once again kindly hosted by member St Peter’s College, University of Oxford in their beautiful dining Hall. James Graham, Bursar warmly welcomed the audience of representatives from local businesses.
The theme of the networking event - Retention, relience and reward – future proofing your business - focused on how having good employment policies and practices could help businesses become an ‘employer of choice’. This theme is particularly relevant to the region, as it was noted that local employers often have difficulty recruiting staff as there is relatively low unemployment in the area and therefore more choice for jobseekers.
Catherine Blaxhall, Head of Carers Support at Carers Oxfordshire spoke about the local support available for carers – particularly for those who may be juggling this with work, and a number of employers spoke about their supportive policies such as offering paid care leave.
John Pearce, Commissioning Manager at Oxfordshire County Council, explained why the Council feels this is is such an important issue and urged the audience to spread the word and encourage other businesses to sign up to the Employers Supporting Working Carers in Oxfordshire scheme.
Oxfordshire County Council is an early adopter of the Employers for Carers ‘Umbrella membership’ sheme for local authorities or other lead organisations. More details can be found here
